ASSIGNMENT 2

Business card annotations - TASK 1

This business card is affective with the use of colour. The contrasting of the black and white stands out and keeps the image in your mind. They has only used one other colour(red). They have used the same pattern on the logo as the ladies hat, the more it is repeated the more you remember it. Cake is imaged on the card to grab your attention of what the product is. This card is a reasonably good business card although it is only one sided so that can be a problem as it doesn't stand out if the card is faced down.

Like the above business card this is one sided, this can be a problem as it is unrecognisable faced down, it also means a lot of information has to be cramped in on a single side. They have used a colour scheme of blue, matching the world wide recognised logo - Ford. A problem is how the text has gone over into the imagery and gets lost there. The imagery however is good as it is clear of what the business is about.

The Bank of Melbourne business card is very cleverly designed. The front is simple but very affective. The image of Melbourne is recognisable and relates to the company name - Melbourne. I like how on the back they repeat the Bank of Melbourne symbol but faded. They have also placed the logo in the same position on the back as the front.

This card is standard. I don't think it follows a theme thought out the card very well. The only same thing is the company's name. But I do like the images as it is extremely clear of what the business is, you don't have to read anything to know.

Like the another card black and white has been used though out the card. It is a fairly plain card. I like the front as it is simple and only the logo is being used. The back however is to plain, I suggest they use the logo on the back in the background or something to remind you of the front.

This card is clever as it is portrait rather than landscape. It makes you remember the card. They have also designed the front and back to be the opposite colour, the logo is in the same position which I like. The colours of the card suggest the theme and style of the cafe, that is clever as you know what to except when you go to the cafe. The font is constant.

Out of all the cards this one is probably my least favourite. It isn't the right size as the standard business card. This can be frustrating as it doesn't fit in the business card pockets etc. It is easy for it to get lost or misplaced. The front and back don't flow and it hard to tell the product or business at first look. The logo is also really hard to read. The colour scheme is not the same either. I do like how on the the back they have used old style font to match the old style business.

This card is smart how it uses the same image on back and front. It's clever how it's all in black and grey apart from the pink circle. I don't like how it doesn't give any information on the product what so ever, I still don't know what the business is.

This business card is good. They have used the same colour and repeated the font and logo several times. It's simple, not to simple and clean. The front is basic. The card is glossy on the front which gives the business a classy, clean feel.

I like how this is a business card and an appointment reminder in one. The colour scheme is basic and repetitive. It would have been good to have the logo on the back to recall the memory.

    ASSIGNMENT 1

1.What type of business do you conduct?
I own a Home-wares shop. It is currently a single store; we are hoping to develop in the years to come.

    2.Did you commence the business?
Yes, about 5 years ago I began this shop/business. I had the opportunity as my kids were growing up and they didn't need care all the time. I and also just ended my previous job so I thought this was the perfect opportunity.

    3.Who are you customers?
As we are a home-wares/art deco store we mainly aim our products at 30+ women.

4.What has been the most difficult thing about running the business?
Defiantly money or time. Money is a huge factor and can limit your ambitions to a certain extend. When we first began it was really tough having to borrow a lot of money and knowing it had to be all paid back, (to the bank). It took a few years to start to feel stable and comfortable.
Time was an issue but not one such a large scale. It was a bigger issue at the beginning, getting into the swing of things and a routine, especially with the kids but now its fine, expect at the busy periods, (Christmas).

5.What do you believe is your most Entrepreneurial skill?
Belief. Is hard to get but once you've got it, it is the key to success or not success. You can go as far as you'd like as long as you have belief and know things can succeeded and fail.

6.If you'd start another business in the future, what would it be?
I'd always thought it would be nice to start up a cute cafe in the Melbourne Lane-ways but I don't think that area is quite for me as I can barely cook!

7.What advice would you give someone starting out a business?
As I said earlier Belief is the key! You need to be able to believe you can make it all the way, but at the same time to expect it all to come overnight, your success. So Belief and Patience. Also do what you love!

8.What are your feelings about handing over your business to a successor, who is a family member?
Over the past year I have really got under control and things are starting to run really well. I'm enjoying myself and that's what it's all about. So at this current time I would consider them becoming part of the team, to help the success, but I'm not ready to give it up yet.

9.Do you have an office/shop or is your business sorely of the Internet?
My business is actually only a single shop at the moment. We are looking to creating a website in the near future and depending on how that goes whenever we set up another store elsewhere.

10.How long have you been in business?
We opened the shop about 5 years ago but planning began between 1 year - 18 months before prior too then.

11.What inspired you do start your OWN business?
I never thought I would be a business owner when I was younger as it sounded so hard and out of reach, however after having children I began to think about it more as it would mean I could chose my hours and do what I love. I guess you could say it was my children.

12.How far ahead to your make your business plans?
I'm not one of those people that foresees the next 10 years. I look at about two years at a time and then re-plan every so often. This helps me keep on task and I can help plan depending what's the trend at that moment.

13.Would you recommend starting up your own business?
Yes, defiantly! You learn so much more about yourself, your limits and skills. It's a lot of fun and worth the effort. If you stick to it success can come if you take the right paths but defiantly give it a go!

14.What is one thing you don't like about your job?
Probably having to tell people they didn't get the job they applied for. That's always difficult; I guess it's something you've just got to do.

15.If you could have started up your business in any other country or city where would it be?
I love France and I think my shop would work well in their style; I can't speak French though so that would have been an issue!

    Topic 2 ~ Part 2

    Topic 2

Search for "The World's 100 most powerful women". From this list, find ONE Australian woman and find who she is, what she does and why she is considered powerful. Include an image of your chosen "power person"

    Julie Bishop

Position: Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party, Foreign Minister.

Julie Bishop is the 38th Australian Foreign Minister and the first women in the position. She was a lawyer before she moved into parliament. She is travelling the world dealing with global issues, tracings and affairs.

    Definition of Entrepreneur:

Entrepreneur is one who organises a business or develops an idea and takes responsibility for its operation, its profits and its losses.

    Topic 1~Part 2

Scenario: Leah, a producer of Australian-made clothing, has made a decision to move her production from Dandenong to Thailand. Her 22 Australian staff members will be retrenched and she will commence production in Chiang Mail, where wages are only about 20% of Victorian wages. She will also save the 12% Superannuation Guarantee cost that she must pay her Australian staff, making production of garments much cheaper in Thailand. This may mean a cost saving for the buyer ... or does it mean more profit for the shareholders?

    1)    Explain at least TWO ethical issues surrounding a decision made by Leah to move production of her clothing business to Thailand, where factory workers are paid 20% of Australian wages

The public and consumers will look differently at the products. This may lower the   amount of products brought as some customers look differently at products brought  overseas and are made by under paid labour workers.

Another issue is the quality and conditions of the factory the clothes are being made in. The standards of safety and cleanness will be lower than factories in Australia so this could affect the clothing's outcome.

    2)  To what extent has Leah acted in a socially responsible manner to her employees?

Leah didn't act that responsible to her employees by making them lose their jobs for her to be able to pay cheaper workers do to the same job. This would have affected these workers as they would have no income and find and new job, this can then affect their families too.

    3)  To what extent has she acted in a responsible manner to one other of her stakeholders (ie. shareholders, employees, creditors, consumers, suppliers, government, and local community)?

Depending on if the sales of clothing drop or rise depends on the amount of profit or loss the stockholders make. If the sales remain the same it was a fair decision as they would earn more as Leah would have to pay the workers 80% less. It is a risk for the stockholders as it could go either way.

    4)  List and briefly explain at least THREE ethical decisions you may need to make when conducing your own eBusiness

Ethical decisions I need to make when creating the business is to make an easy product to make so I can make them by myself. I need to use good quality materials to attract buyers that they are buying quality things. Chose an age group and market towards them, advertise to their liking.

    Task 2

    Individual task

    Three business ideas

BRACLETS- They is popular with younger & teen age groups. They are easy to make and in bulk too. String and beads are cheap and if many are sold a reasonable profit can be made. They’re also light and easy to send in the post.

KITCHEN HOMEWARES – Cooking is something I enjoy, I thought of involving this hobby to making a business making aprons, tea towels, places mats and napkins. A range of things for the kitchen, involving what I love. This would be popular with all age groups. I could make them with all different patterns to suit age, gender and occasions. They wouldn’t be trouble posting either.

SCRUCHIES – scrunchies used to be popular and are coming back in. They are cheap and easy to make. You can make lots of patterns to suit particular need as well as school colours to wear to school and they are easy to post as they are small and light.

    Individual task, no.2

KITCHEN HOMEWARES – Interests me, how much? This business idea interests me a lot as I love food and cooking. It’s a good idea as I repeats to what I love but isn’t perishable like food. Experience? I have little experience in sewing so I would have to spend some time teaching myself. Simple to set up? It will take some time learning to sew and a new skill set but once I get the hang of it I think it will be fun! Any names? I haven’t thought of any name ideas at the moment. Future of the business? Yes I can imagine this business running in years to come.

    Individual task, no.3

    Reasons for your final decision?

FINAL eBusiness decision? My final decision is to go with the kitchen home wares business idea. Why? Because it interests me and it’s what I love, I think it will be fun learning new skills. It isn’t something common and it isn’t just suitable for my age group. Two advantages? Creativity – it’s an interesting idea and is not that common and I can create amazing design and use awesome pattern that may be a success. Tim e – ill spend a lot of time getting my products at a high standard. Things ill need – material, Time, money, designs, ribbon, buttons, sewing machine
